Background

A creative and reformative development for students in Hornchurch

A refurbishment project supporting students with Special Educational Needs and disabilities at New City College’s Ardleigh Green Campus in Hornchurch. Works on site consisted of the refurbishment of an existing block to create a new SEND Centre.

The project created an inclusive and nurturing study environment for learners, with the implementation of various innovative changes and enhancements to accommodate the diverse needs and aspirations of the students.

Developments on the campus included the creation of a new entrance & reception space, classrooms, sensory rooms with specialist acoustic ceiling panels, hygiene room, kitchen workshop and an independent living unit, speech & language and job coaching meeting rooms.

The scheme highlights the significance of creative reuse in the built environment, as the campus features a modified layout as well as imaginative interior design.

As the refurbishments took place in a college, works were required to be completed within a short time frame, in preparation for the school’s new term. Due to the time constraints, prompt decision-making and collaboration within the team was crucial. Additionally, the scoping and redesign works completed onsite ensured that the build was practical and had a minimal impact on the college.
