Developer, Setha Group has submitted proposals to develop Biggleston Yard
Canterbury is Kent’s leading tourism destination and Biggleston Yard will bring a new dimension to the city’s visitor experience. Due to the historic significance, the scheme will involve a partial demolition, an extension and refurbishment of existing buildings and erection of new buildings, three to five storeys in height.
The retail and leisure-led development will include a new pedestrian retail arcade and market hall, and public realm with pedestrian access. The scheme will also allow for 32 serviced apartments, 33 residential units, and office space.
The scheme is named after HM Biggleston & Sons, the family-run ironmonger business based on the site between 1835 and 1963. While being sympathetic to Canterbury’s heritage and history, Biggleston Yard is looking to bring a new and exciting atmosphere to the visitor experience.
If approved, construction will begin in summer 2022. From beginning on site, the construction of the Biggleston Yard project is expected to be undertaken in phases and completed in two to three years.

Manuel Alsoni, CEO, Setha Group said:
We are pleased to have submitted our plan for Biggleston Yard. The public increasingly demand more from their experience when shopping and visiting city centres. Biggleston Yard presents the opportunity for Canterbury to evolve and meet these demands. We look forward to delivering this development with Stace’s support.

Simon Hugill, Partner at Stace LLP commented:
We are excited to help Setha Group realise their ambitious plans for Biggleston Yard. The repositioning of this department store will enhance Canterbury for both locals and tourists

Stace LLP is providing project management and employer’s agent services, overseeing the design & construction stages. CGL & Clague architects, Webb Yates structural engineer & M&E consultants and RPS planning consultants also make up the project team.
