We were back at Whitechapel Mission last Friday with a team of eight for another Breakfast Challenge. At Stace, we encourage staff to use their “Giving Back Days” and had a strong take up for this, despite the 5.45am start.
Whitechapel Mission is a self-funded homeless charity and one of the few that remained open in London throughout COVID. They are open every day throughout the year from 6am and serve those in need with a free breakfast from 8am, with a choice of cereals to a full English.
On our second volunteering day, a team of eight from Stace arrived at the shelter for a 5.30am start. During the two-hour shift, the team served 118 breakfasts to those very much in need of a nourishing meal.
Ed quote: “The 3.15am alarm clock was tough, and it was hard graft in the kitchen but so worthwhile and nothing compared to what the people visiting the centre go through on a daily basis. What surprised me most was how much fun the morning was. The staff at the charity are real stars; not only do they start their working day at 5.30am every day, but they bring energy, passion and professionalism, not to mention a great playlist!”
Fraser Rumble said: “Helping out at the Life Skills centre was an eye-opening and humbling experience. Being able to help and support people in navigating tricky situations, whether personal or work-related was hugely rewarding and something I am keen to do again to help those in need.”
Well done to Fraser Rumble and Eleanor Baillie for providing Life Skills Advice, and Habiba Sule-Adejoh, Ieva Borm, Luci Mulroy, Dan Hunter, Edward Bain, Zoe Greenway, Thomas Callaghan, Stuart Hutchinson for taking on the Breakfast Challenge.
