On 10 March we hosted an interactive virtual careers talk for year 12 and 13 students from three schools in London Borough of Newham.
Our aim for the session was to show the variety of careers available within our industry, the different routes in and how the profession can be so rewarding. At Stace, we recognise the need to actively engage and inspire all of the next generation. The findings from our 2019 NextGen Index showed that the industry is missing out on the top talent from the next generation: 16-18 year-olds are not aware of the opportunities available within the construction sector.
When asked whether they would like to work in the construction and built environment industry, there was a 22% increase in agreement by the end of the session.
Mr Jarvis Careers Adviser from St. Angela’s Ursuline School said: “The students found it really useful to hear about the different careers available in the industry. The presenters dispelled certain myths that might have acted as barriers to entry which hopefully has encouraged the students to see it as a great career path.
Another benefit was that each presenter had entered the industry from a different route. One had undertaken an apprenticeship, another had completed a Masters in Construction Management having previously obtained an undergraduate degree in Law and another studied Quantity Surveying at university.”
Mark Ashby, Partner at Stace said: “We were so pleased to be able to give an insight into careers available in our industry. Students have faced such disruption as a result of the pandemic so we hope that this session has provided inspiration for professional career paths available in the property and construction industry.”
