Graduate Stories

Thomas Callaghan
Building Surveyor

How did you find out about the Stace graduate scheme?

I was brought on as an Assistant Building Surveyor during Covid and was enrolled into the next intake of Graduates.

What advice would you give students who are considering the Stace graduate scheme?

The Graduate Scheme is such a valuable experience, it covers all disciplines giving you knowledge about areas of the industry you may not have covered at Uni or experience day to day. It’s also a perfect opportunity to get to know your peers in other departments which benefits both your work and social life.

What do you enjoy most about working for Stace?

Everyone is always happy to help where they can, I’ve always been supported and everyone has been keen to share their knowledge and help me to solve problems when they arise.

What are your future career plans?

The next step for me is to get myself chartered, the Building Surveying department gives plenty of support through the APC for those who want to sit it and when I’m chartered I’d like to help others through the process.

What did you learn on the graduate development scheme that you have applied to your day-to-day role?

I’ve got a better understanding of what skills and knowledge the other disciplines have and by getting to know others on the scheme its helped when I’ve needed questions answering outside my area to know who to go to and to have people that I can talk through problems with.

What drew you to the construction/property industry?

It gave the opportunity to do something challenging, where you never stop gaining new knowledge, skills and ideas. Each project is unique, with its own set of challenges and new teams to work with to produce an end result you can physically see and be proud of.

The Graduate Scheme is such a valuable experience, it covers all disciplines giving you knowledge about areas of the industry you may not have covered at Uni or experience day to day.

Would you recommend this route to future students?

I would 100% recommend this route to future students. The chance to work alongside your degree has many benefits: first hand experience of the industry, help from qualified colleagues and earning whilst you are learning!
