Architectural Technician/Designer

Join our dynamic team in London as an Architectural Technician/Designer. This key role offers the chance to be part of a busy, multidisciplinary team working on a large retail development rollout programme.
You will handle multiple design elements, including site plans, retail layouts, branding, and project planning. From initial feasibility to contractor appointment, you’ll collaborate closely with the Client’s Acquisition team, consultants, legal experts, and the Client Team to ensure project success.
Join our Design department as a key player, where you’ll encompass all the technical aspects of a Designer. This role involves design coordination, management, and liaison with project team members, including internal Project Managers and external consultants, across multiple projects simultaneously.
You’ll also provide input, control, and direction to the wider team, showcasing your technical abilities and ensuring project success.
Projects range from conversion and fit out of pubs and other existing buildings, developers’ shells, existing retail units, listed buildings, petrol filling stations and mixed use developments.
This role is based in our London office and offers the exciting opportunity for regular travel to meet project demands. Flexibility is essential, as you’ll need to adapt to varying schedules and project needs.
You will excel in all areas of Architecture, including but not limited to:
- Providing layouts, space planning and detailed design within a team responsible for the roll out of stores for a blue-chip Convenience brand.
- Reviewing of potential sites. To assess feasibility in terms of layout, size, deliveries M&E equipment, Building Control issues, fire strategy and overall aesthetic design
- Providing design concepts in line with the Convenience brand format standard
- Preparing detailed construction packs including; general arrangements, setting out, roof, sections and elevations and branding
- Production of retail plans
- The production of measured surveys of existing buildings
- Liaison with and communication with the Client and relevant consultants.
- Liaison with sub-contractors on site specific issues including but not exclusive to:
- Building Regulations
- Measured Surveys
- M&E and Plant Design
- Fire Strategy
- Vehicle Tracking
- Ability to understand and support, where necessary, negotiations with landlord and developers to agree specifications for client requirements and approval of fit-out proposals.
- Liaise with retail planners to ensure fit out proposals take account of site specific issues
- Assist in providing legal design documents/information including lease plans, demise plans and OS maps/information for liaison with solicitors to advice on construction issues, reviewing agreements to leases to ensure no conflict with proposals.
- Reviewing and interpreting various surveys/design information of existing buildings, sites etc, for condition, environmental and geotechnical issues
- Maintaining dialogue with client’s acquisitions executives to ensure they have the information they require.
- Ensure Planning drawings are produced and submitted to the various Planning Consultants for submission to the Local Authority
- Review highway and delivery issues with consultant and ensure all necessary consents are obtained
- Be able to problem solve and provide alternative design solutions – troubleshoot.

Ideally you will possess the following skills and qualifications:
- Advanced AutoCAD and Revit modelling skills (essential)
- Proficient in the use of Adobe InDesign
- Comprehensive knowledge of UK Building Regulation codes
- Able to demonstrate technical knowledge in construction and design principles especially in retail design.
- Proven experience in producing construction packs with detailing for the retail sector from feasibility to completion
- Extensive knowledge of building services and structural elements in building construction
- Awareness of risk management principles within projects
- A proven track record with retail sector experience1
- Client facing experience
- High levels of attention to detail
- Capable of working to strict targets and timescales
- Proficient in IT and using software including; Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, InDesign (Photoshop, sketch up)
